Canada enchanter’s nightshade (Circaea canadensis) is a creeping perennial plant that typically grows 30 to 80 cm tall. It is found in cool, moist woodlands, ravines, and maple forests across eastern Canada and the United States. Its slender stems are slightly arched, and its bright green leaves are broad, oval to heart-shaped, with prominent veins and finely toothed margins. In early summer, small white to pale pink flowers appear in upright clusters, followed by tiny fruits covered with hooked bristles that cling easily to animal fur or clothing, aiding in seed dispersal. This plant often forms a good ground cover in shaded forests, where it plays a subtle but important role in maintaining understory structure.
Ecological roles
Canada enchanter’s nightshade contributes to ground cover in shaded forests, helping to reduce erosion and maintain soil moisture. Its hooked fruits promote seed dispersal by animals, while its presence supports forest biodiversity by offering shelter for small invertebrates and helping to stabilize local soil moisture. It forms part of the typical herbaceous layer of cool woodlands and is a key component of a balanced forest understory.
Upon receipt, it is recommended to place the envelope containing the seeds in the refrigerator until you are ready to begin the germination process. This cold period helps preserve seed viability and promotes more uniform and successful germination.
Canada enchanter's nightshade seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the growing notes below for more details.
