Calico aster (Symphyotrichum lateriflorum) is a graceful, delicate perennial that typically reaches 50 to 100 cm in height. It forms fine, airy clumps that become covered in numerous small flowers in late summer and into fall. The white flowers, with a yellow centre that turns golden brown at maturity, appear mainly along the sides of the stems, creating a soft, cloud-like ornamental effect. The species grows in full sun or partial shade, in forest edges, open meadows and natural ditches, on fresh to slightly dry well-drained soils.
Furthermore, asters (Symphyotrichum spp.) are recognized as keystone plants for biodiversity in many North American ecoregions, as they support a high diversity of beneficial insects and caterpillars, which in turn supports the food web for birds.
Ecological roles
Calico aster is an important nectar source late in the season, especially valuable to wild bees, bumblebees and butterflies at a time when few other plants are still in bloom. Its late flowering period is particularly beneficial to overwintering bumblebee queens. It also contributes to light soil stabilization in open habitats.
Calico aster seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
