Calico aster (Symphyotrichum lateriflorum) is a graceful, delicate perennial that typically reaches 50 to 100 cm in height. It forms fine, airy clumps that become covered in numerous small flowers in late summer and into fall. The white flowers, with a yellow centre that turns golden brown at maturity, appear mainly along the sides of the stems, creating a soft, cloud-like ornamental effect. The species grows in full sun or partial shade, in forest edges, open meadows and natural ditches, on fresh to slightly dry well-drained soils.
Furthermore, asters (
Symphyotrichum spp.) are recognized as keystone plants for biodiversity in many North American ecoregions, as they support a high diversity of beneficial insects and caterpillars, which in turn supports the food web for birds.

Ecological roles
Calico aster is an important nectar source late in the season, especially valuable to wild bees, bumblebees and butterflies at a time when few other plants are still in bloom. Its late flowering period is particularly beneficial to overwintering bumblebee queens. It also contributes to light soil stabilization in open habitats.

Calico aster seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Calico Aster

Calico aster grows in full sun or partial shade in fresh to moderately dry, well-drained soils, and tolerates poor soil conditions.

The seeds require a 60- to 90-day cold and moist stratification. To do this, simply mix the seeds with a moist substrate (such as vermiculite), place the mixture in a hermetic Ziploc-style bag, and keep it in the refrigerator for 60 to 90 days. This step may be carried out naturally by outdoor sowing in fall.

Then sow on the soil surface, without covering, as the seeds need light to germinate. Maintain constant moisture. Germination generally occurs in 2 to 4 weeks.

Growth is moderate and the plant may self-sow discreetly. Once established, it requires no maintenance unless its natural spread needs to be controlled.
