Jack-in-the-pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum) is a fascinating perennial plant known for its unique structure and striking bloom. Typically reaching 30 to 100 cm in height, this plant has an upright stem and a compound leaf divided into three oval leaflets. Its most captivating feature is its cone-shaped inflorescence, wrapped in a green or purple-mottled spathe that opens in spring. The flower emits a soft fragrance, attracting various pollinators, including flies and bees. It thrives in moist, organic-rich soils and is commonly found in dense forests, along riverbanks, and in shaded areas. Jack-in-the-pulpit is hardy and does well in partial shade, adding a touch of greenery and originality to any garden.

Ecological Role
Jack-in-the-pulpit plays an important role in its ecosystem by providing a habitat for various pollinating insects in the spring. In addition to attracting pollinators, its roots help stabilize soil in moist areas, reducing erosion. This species contributes to forest biodiversity, serving as a food source for some herbivores while offering a unique plant structure that can serve as shelter for other species.

Growing Notes | Stratified Seeds - Jack-in-the-pulpit

Upon receipt, it is important to place the packet containing the Jack-in-the-pulpit seeds in the refrigerator until sowing.

Jack-in-the-pulpit grows in part shade to full shade and prefers moist, rich soil.

Jack-in-the-pulpit seeds require a 60-day cold and moist stratification period to ensure germination.

The Jack-in-the-pulpit seeds offered by Akène are sold in a sealed bag containing moist vermiculite. Stratification began in mid-September. Depending on the month of receipt, the seeds will be at a different stage of the dormancy process. Here is the recommended schedule to complete the dormancy cycle:

The seeds are ready to be sown outdoors, directly in the ground or in pots, in mid-November. Sow them just before the first frosts and snowfall. Take care not to sow too early, to avoid the seeds germinating before the start of winter.

Sow the seeds about 10 mm deep in a well-drained substrate. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination of this species generally occurs after 15 to 30 days when conditions are favourable.
