Deer-tongue panicgrass (Dichanthelium clandestinum) is a perennial grass that forms dense clumps and typically grows 30 to 100 cm tall. It naturally occurs in open woodlands, dry to moist meadows, and along roadsides. Its upright, sturdy stems bear broad, dark green leaves that are slightly hairy and rough to the touch. In early summer, it produces small, visible panicles, followed by a second, more discreet flowering at the leaf axils. In the fall, the foliage often turns reddish or golden. This species is common in southern Canada and the northeastern United States, where it adapts well to both sandy and clay soils, as long as they are well drained.

Sociability index: 3 → Indicates the plant’s behaviour in space and its interactions with other plants.

Ecological roles
Deer-tongue panicgrass plays an important role in forest and open meadow ecosystems. Its thick roots help anchor the soil and prevent erosion. Its seeds provide food for several bird species, including sparrows and wild turkeys, while its foliage offers shelter for small insects and amphibians. Although its flowers are mainly wind-pollinated, their presence also attracts a variety of pollinators. Thanks to its density and resilience, this species contributes to the stability of plant cover in open and semi-shaded habitats.

Deer-tongue panicgrass seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Semences - Deer-tongue Panicgrass

Deer-tongued panicgrass grows well in full sun or part shade, in sandy to clay soils as long as they are well drained.

The seeds require a 30-day cold and moist stratification period. To do this, mix the seeds with three parts of moist vermiculite, place this mixture in a sealed plastic bag, and refrigerate it for about 30 days. This step can also be carried out naturally by outdoor sowing in the fall.

Sow the seeds 3 mm deep in a well-drained substrate and keep the soil evenly moist without waterlogging. Germination generally occurs after about two weeks.
