Swamp rose-mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos), also known as hardy hibiscus, is a remarkable perennial plant that typically reaches up to 175 cm in height. Its large flowers, which can measure up to 25 cm in diametre, come in vibrant shades of white, pink, or red, with a darker center that inevitably draws attention. The leaves, broad and lobed, are a glossy green and can reach 20 cm in length. This species prefers moist soils and thrives particularly well in sunny areas, such as marshes and riverbanks. The swamp rose-mallow is a hardy plant capable of withstanding cold winters, although it may lose its aerial parts and regrow in the following spring.
Medicinal and Culinary Uses
The leaves and roots are rich in mucilage. Like many other plants in this family, they are demulcent and emollient.
Ecological Role
The swamp rose-mallow plays a vital role in the aquatic ecosystem. Its large flowers attract various pollinators, including bees and butterflies, while providing habitat for many insects. The plant's roots help stabilize shorelines, contributing to soil erosion prevention. By creating rich and diverse habitats, this plant promotes biodiversity in wetland environments.
Swamp rose-mallow seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
