Sea lymegrass (Leymus mollis) is a perennial grass well-suited to coastal dunes and beaches, particularly in areas such as Gaspésie and the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Characterized by its blue-green foliage and long seed heads, sea lymegrass brings height and elegance to landscapes, especially in dry sections of the garden. This grass can reach up to 1.5 metres in height and is crucial for stabilizing dry soils against erosion, thanks to its deep and vigorous root system. While it thrives in sandy coastal environments, it can also adapt to other conditions and tolerates drought well. Sea lymegrass spreads through rhizomes, making it a hardy plant, but it is important to allocate enough space to prevent it from becoming invasive.

Ecological Roles
Sea lymegrass plays a key role in stabilizing soils, particularly in dry, sandy coastal environments, where it helps prevent erosion. Its strong rhizomes anchor the soil effectively, providing protection for dunes and other exposed areas against wind and tides. Additionally, sea lymegrass is highly drought-resistant, making it a great choice for dry gardens or low-water areas. Its capacity to thrive in harsh conditions and spread rapidly through rhizomes makes it a vital plant in ecological restoration projects, particularly along coastlines and in vulnerable habitats.

Sea lymegrass seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Sea Lymegrass

Sea lymegrass seeds require cold stratification followed by light exposure for successful germination.

Mix the seeds with a moist substrate (vermiculite, perlite, or sand) and place them in a plastic bag. Store the bag in the refrigerator for 60 days.

Afterward, spread the seeds on the soil surface, pressing them gently to ensure good contact. Keep the soil moist during the germination process, which should take around 15 days. If needed, you can use a plastic dome or bag to maintain humidity, but be cautious to avoid excessive moisture or heat.

Typically, sea lymegrass seeds have a germination rate of about 50% to 60%.
