Sallow sedge (Carex lurida) is a perennial herbaceous plant known for its bright yellow-green foliage that forms attractive cascading clumps. Typically reaching 45 cm in height, it is ideal for wet environments such as water gardens, marshy areas, or the edges of ponds. It tolerates flooding well. While it prefers moist soils, sallow sedge also adapts to average soils, making it a flexible choice for various garden settings. In June, it produces spiky green seed heads that persist throughout the summer, turning brown in the fall and providing a valuable food source for seed-eating birds.
Ecological Roles
Sallow sedge plays a major ecological role in Quebec’s wetlands. Its spiky seeds, which last until the fall, serve as a food source for seed-eating birds. Additionally, with its dense root system, it helps stabilize wet soils and prevents erosion in marshy areas and around water bodies. Beyond supporting wildlife with its seeds, sallow sedge attracts a variety of beneficial insects that find shelter in its dense foliage. Its presence in natural gardens or wetland ecosystems enriches biodiversity and helps maintain balanced, healthy ecosystems.
Sallow sedge seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
