Large-flowered bellwort (Uvularia grandiflora) is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Colchicaceae family, growing between 30 and 60 cm tall. It is distinguished by its gracefully arching stems and alternate leaves, oval to lanceolate, with a soft green colour. Its pendulous, solitary flowers appear in spring, usually in April or May. They are bright yellow, bell-shaped, elongated and slightly twisted, giving a delicate and elegant appearance. The fruits are small capsules that release brownish seeds in summer.

Large-flowered bellwort grows naturally in deciduous forests and rich, moist woodlands, often on shaded slopes. It prefers cool, well-drained soils rich in organic matter and thrives in partial to full shade. In Quebec, it is cultivated as an ornamental plant in woodland gardens for its decorative foliage and its spectacular spring flowering.

Medicinal and culinary uses
Traditionally, large-flowered bellwort has been used in folk medicine for its astringent and expectorant properties. Certain root-based preparations were employed to relieve sore throats and mucous membrane irritations.

Ecological roles
Large-flowered bellwort contributes to the spring biodiversity of woodlands. Its nectar-bearing flowers attract various pollinating insects, including wild bees and hoverflies. By covering the ground early in the season, it also helps limit the spread of invasive plants in forest habitats and provides protective cover for soil microfauna.

Large-flowered bellwort seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Stratified Seeds - Large-flowered Bellwort

In order to germinate, large-flowered bellwort seeds require a warm moist stratification period of 60 days, followed by a cold moist stratification period of 90 days.

The large-flowered bellwort seeds that we offer at Akène are sold in a sealed bag with moistened vermiculite. It is important to keep them in the refrigerator until the time comes to start your sowing.

In order for the seeds to be ready to germinate at the beginning of May, they must follow these stratification steps:

Early December: Take the bag out of the refrigerator and leave it at room temperature, away from light and in its original packaging, for 60 days.

Early February: Put this same packaging back in the refrigerator for a cold stratification period of 90 days.

Your seeds will then be ready to germinate at the beginning of May, but watch them carefully as some may start to germinate during this period.

Next, sow the seeds about 9 mm deep in a well-drained substrate.

Germination is slow and may occur after several months. In some cases, seedlings first develop their roots and remain underground during the first year before producing above-ground growth the following season. Maintain constant moisture in order to mimic the natural conditions of germination.
