Large-flowered bellwort (Uvularia grandiflora) is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Colchicaceae family, growing between 30 and 60 cm tall. It is distinguished by its gracefully arching stems and alternate leaves, oval to lanceolate, with a soft green colour. Its pendulous, solitary flowers appear in spring, usually in April or May. They are bright yellow, bell-shaped, elongated and slightly twisted, giving a delicate and elegant appearance. The fruits are small capsules that release brownish seeds in summer.

Large-flowered bellwort grows naturally in deciduous forests and rich, moist woodlands, often on shaded slopes. It prefers cool, well-drained soils rich in organic matter and thrives in partial to full shade. In Quebec, it is cultivated as an ornamental plant in woodland gardens for its decorative foliage and its spectacular spring flowering.

Medicinal and culinary uses
Traditionally, large-flowered bellwort has been used in folk medicine for its astringent and expectorant properties. Certain root-based preparations were employed to relieve sore throats and mucous membrane irritations.

Large-flowered bellwort contributes to the spring biodiversity of woodlands. Its nectar-bearing flowers attract various pollinating insects, including wild bees and hoverflies. By covering the ground early in the season, it also helps limit the spread of invasive plants in forest habitats and provides protective cover for soil microfauna.
