Wild raisin (Viburnum cassinoides, syn. Viburnum nudum), also known as witherod vibunum, is a native shrub of wet habitats, typically reaching about 1.5 m in height, with a rounded and compact form. Its opposite oval leaves are medium green in summer and turn spectacular shades of red to purple in fall. Flowering occurs in early summer as flat-topped clusters of small creamy white flowers. The fruits, first green then red, mature to a blue-black colour and may persist into winter. The species grows in full sun or partial shade in moist to wet organic or mineral soils, acidic or slightly peaty, commonly found in bogs, marsh edges and natural drainage areas.
Medicinal and culinary uses
The fruits are theoretically edible when fully ripe, but their taste is bitter and mealy, which limits their culinary use.
Ecological roles
Wild raisin is an important resource for wildlife. Its nectar-rich flowers attract wild bees and hoverflies in early summer. Its fruits are consumed by several bird species later in the season, especially when they persist into early winter. Its root system contributes to the stabilization of wet soils, and the shrub provides excellent cover for small wildlife in riparian habitats.
Wild raisin seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
