Marsh marigold (Caltha palustris) is a perennial plant in the Ranunculaceae family. It typically grows between 20 and 60 cm tall and forms small colonies in wet environments. Its hollow, thick, and glabrous stems bear kidney- or heart-shaped leaves that are shiny and dark green. The very showy flowering occurs in early spring, often right after the snow melts. The yellow flowers, resembling small buttercups, are composed of five shiny petaloid sepals, with no true petals.
Marsh marigold naturally grows in marshes, ditches, wet meadows, streambanks, and the edges of floodplain forests. It prefers rich soils that are waterlogged or temporarily submerged, and grows best in full sun or partial shade.
Ecological roles
Marsh marigold plays a key role in wetland ecosystems by providing dense ground cover and helping to stabilize banks. It blooms early in the spring and serves as an early source of pollen for pollinating insects, including certain species of bees and hoverflies. It also contributes to plant biodiversity in riparian and peatland habitats.
Upon receipt, it is recommended to place the envelope containing the seeds in the refrigerator until you are ready to begin the germination process. This cold period helps preserve seed viability and promotes more uniform and successful germination.
Marsh marigold seeds require scarification and cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
