Black walnut (Juglans nigra) is a native deciduous tree of eastern North America, typically reaching 30 metres in height. Its trunk is straight, with dark bark that is deeply furrowed. Its compound leaves, 30 to 60 cm long, are composed of 15 to 23 lance-shaped, toothed leaflets. Spring flowering produces pendulous male catkins and inconspicuous female flowers. The fruits are round nuts with hard shells, enclosed in a green husk that darkens as it ripens.This species is well known for its high-quality wood, used in cabinetry and woodworking.

Furthermore, black walnut is recognized as a keystone plant for biodiversity in many North American ecoregions, as it supports a wide variety of insects and birds that rely on its ecological resources.

Growing Notes | Stratified Seeds - Black Walnut

Upon receipt, it is important to place the packet containing the black walnut seeds in the refrigerator until sowing time.

Black walnut grows in full sun or part shade and prefers rich, moist, and well-drained soil.

Black walnut seeds require a 90 to 120-day cold and moist stratification period to ensure germination.

The black walnut seeds offered by Akène are sold in a sealed bag containing moistened vermiculite. Stratification began in mid-September. Depending on the month of receipt, they will therefore be at a different stage of the stratification process. Here is the recommended schedule to complete the dormancy cycle:

The seeds are ready to start indoors around mid-January. You can also start them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed in your area, keeping the bag in the refrigerator until sowing time. Check the seeds in your refrigerator from time to time to make sure they have not begun to germinate.

Sow the seeds about 10 mm deep in a well-drained substrate. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination of this species generally occurs after 4 to 6 weeks.
