Beach pea (Lathyrus japonicus) is a creeping perennial herbaceous plant in the Fabaceae family, found along sandy and gravelly shores in Quebec. In summer, it produces showy flowers grouped in clusters, in shades of pinkish purple to deep purple with a lighter base, typical of the pea family. These are followed by elongated pods containing several brownish to black seeds.
It grows mainly in coastal habitats, including dunes and upper beaches, where it tolerates poor, sandy, or gravelly soils, as well as saline conditions and marine winds.
Ecological roles
Beach pea plays a key role in stabilizing sandy soils and coastal dunes. Through its spreading rhizomes and nitrogen-fixing ability, it enriches the soil and facilitates the establishment of other plants. Its nectar-bearing flowers attract a range of pollinating insects, including bumblebees and solitary bees, while its pods provide a food source for certain seed-eating birds. By rapidly colonizing open and exposed areas, it helps limit erosion and protect fragile coastal habitats.
Beach pea seeds require scarification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
