Keystone Plants – Essential Pillars of Biodiversity

Some native plants support far more than their simple presence would suggest. Known as keystone plants, they provide foliage, pollen, or nectar to a multitude of insects, including caterpillars, which are an indispensable resource for many insect-eating birds.

Research by entomologist Douglas Tallamy shows that only about 5 percent of native plant genera can, on their own, support 70 to 75 percent of local caterpillar species. These caterpillars form a crucial food base for birds, bats, and other insectivores. As a result, just a few well-chosen plants can significantly strengthen the biodiversity of a garden.

The concept is inspired by architecture: just as the central stone of an arch supports the entire structure, keystone plants stabilize ecological networks. Where they are missing, the diversity and abundance of insects decline, weakening the entire food chain.

Planting these species in a garden, on a balcony, or in a landscape is a concrete action that supports pollinators, birds, and the resilience of local ecosystems. A small effort, but an immense impact for nature !

Combo of 4 native keystone plant seed packs.

These four highly ornamental species attract a variety of pollinators, promoting biodiversity.

  • New England aster, a stunning aster belonging to the keystone plant genus Symphyotrichum. This striking perennial features purple flowers that bloom from August to October, playing a crucial role as a late-season nectar source.

  • Lance-leaved tickseed, a charming sunny perennial. Its bright yellow flowers, carried all summer long, attract a wide variety of pollinators and bring a vibrant touch to the garden.

  • Common sneezeweed, a warm-toned late-season perennial. Its orange or golden flowers brighten garden clusters in fall and offer a valuable resource to bees and butterflies late in the season.

  • Grass-leaved goldenrod, a lovely, robust, and elegant perennial. This slender plant gets its name from its narrow, grass-like leaves arranged along its stems. In addition to its appeal to pollinators, it also has medicinal properties.
