Smooth rose (Rosa blanda) is a native shrub of Quebec that forms dense thickets reaching 0.5 to 1.5 metres in height. It is distinguished by its simple, bright pink flowers that bloom in early summer and attract numerous pollinators. Its red fruits, known as rose hips, often persist through the winter and add a decorative touch to the snowy landscape.
This species grows naturally in prairies, forest edges, and well-drained sandy soils. Hardy and tolerant, it thrives in poor soils as well as on dry slopes. Its ability to spread by suckers makes it an ideal plant for soil stabilisation and the naturalisation of open habitats.

Medicinal and culinary uses
The rose hips of smooth rose are rich in vitamin C and can be eaten raw or cooked. They are used to make jams, jellies, syrups, and herbal teas. The lightly scented petals can be added to salads or used to flavour desserts.
Medicinally, the dried hips are used as a tonic and as a remedy for colds and respiratory infections. They are slightly astringent and diuretic.

Ecological roles
Smooth rose provides an important nectar and pollen resource for bees, hoverflies, and bumblebees in early summer. Its simple flowers promote efficient pollination and support a wide diversity of local insects. The red fruits feed birds such as thrushes and waxwings while contributing to the natural dispersal of seeds. Thanks to its spreading root system, smooth rose helps stabilise soils and supports the regeneration of open ecosystems.

Smooth rose seeds require scarification and cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Seeds - Smooth Rose

"Smooth rose grows best in well-drained soils and prefers full sun. Hardy and adaptable, it tolerates various soil types as long as they are not waterlogged.

For germination, several months of preparation are required before sowing. Seeds must first undergo scarification by soaking, followed by a cold stratification, then a warm stratification, and finally another cold stratification.

Scarification: Soak the seeds in room temperature water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat and promote imbibition.

Stratification (warm and cold): Mix one part seeds with three parts moist vermiculite and place the mixture in an airtight bag (such as a Ziploc). Keep the bag in the refrigerator for the first cold period of 60 to 90 days. Next, remove it and store it in a warm place for about 60 to 90 days. Then return it to the refrigerator for another 60 to 90 days before sowing. These steps can be carried out naturally by sowing in the fall, but in that case germination may take up to two years. Alternatively, the final cold stratification can be achieved through outdoor sowing.

Sow the seeds about 9 mm deep in a light, well-drained substrate. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged until germination.

Difficult germination: Germination is often slow and irregular. Because it may occur several months after sowing, it is important not to discard the seeds if they do not sprout after the first attempt. The germination process can be repeated if necessary.
Les semences du genre Rosa sont reconnues pour leur dormance profonde et leur germination souvent difficile."
