Downy serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea) is a small tree or shrub of the rose family, reaching between 6 and 15 m in height. It has a slender, rounded form, with smooth greyish bark on young twigs that becomes slightly fissured with age. Its deciduous leaves, oval to elliptic and 5 to 10 cm long, are finely toothed. They appear slightly pubescent and silvery when unfolding, turn dark green in summer, and take on shades of orange-red to bright red in the fall. The spring bloom is spectacular: star-shaped white flowers appear before the foliage, grouped in drooping clusters and bringing brightness at the beginning of the season. In summer, small spherical berries of 8 to 12 mm develop, turning from red to dark purple at maturity; they are edible and sweet. Downy serviceberry grows in forest edges, clearings, and well-drained slopes, in slightly acidic to neutral soils that are fresh and well-drained. It tolerates both full sun and partial shade. In Quebec, it is common in southern woodland areas, where it is distinguished by its early blooming and the brilliance of its autumn foliage.
Medicinal and culinary uses
The edible fruits can be consumed raw or cooked. Juicy and sweet, they are rich in iron and copper. They are often used to prepare pies, jams, or wine.
Ecological roles
Downy serviceberry provides an early source of nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators at the start of spring. Its ripe fruits are eaten by many bird and mammal species, contributing to seed dispersal. It also serves as a host plant for the caterpillars of many species of moths and butterflies.
Downy serviceberry seeds require scarification and cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.
