Its leaves are oval, slightly fuzzy on the underside, medium green in summer and turning yellow in fall. The highly ornamental flowering occurs in summer as long conical spikes of small bright pink flowers. The species grows in full sun in bogs, wet meadows and poorly drained banks, tolerating acidic and constantly moist soils.

Ecological roles
Steeplebush produces an abundance of nectar highly valued by bees, bumblebees and butterflies in midsummer. Its dense colonies also provide shelter for beneficial insects and certain small birds of riparian habitats. Its ability to establish in wet and unstable soils makes it useful for the light stabilization of wetland environments.

Steeplebush seeds require scarification and cold stratification to ensure germination.
