Its fine, straight, light green stems resemble stiff threads. The narrow, reduced leaves are concentrated at the base of the plant, while the brownish inflorescences appear on the side of the stems just below their tips. In late summer, the small golden-brown capsules contain tiny seeds.

A common and adaptable species, path rush grows in a wide range of habitats such as ditches, paths, clearings, wet meadows, and slightly compacted areas. It tolerates both moist and temporarily dry soils and is found throughout Quebec, from the southern regions to the boreal zone.

Sociability index: 3 → Indicates the plant’s behaviour in space and its interactions with other plants.

Ecological roles
Path rush contributes to soil stabilization and the regeneration of disturbed environments. Its fine, spreading roots limit erosion and allow it to quickly colonize compacted or trampled ground. It also provides shelter for small invertebrates and helps maintain soil moisture.
