It generally reaches a height of about 12 metres and has a relatively slender trunk. The bark is brownish grey, marked by narrow, scaly strips that loosen slightly at the edges, giving the tree a distinctive appearance. The leaves are oval to lance-shaped, measuring between 5 and 10 cm long, with finely toothed margins. They are dark green on the upper surface and paler underneath, turning yellow in the fall. In spring, the tree produces drooping male catkins and shorter female catkins, which develop into hop-like fruits, giving rise to its name. These fruits are small nuts enclosed in papery bracts, which help their dispersal by wind. Eastern hop-hornbeam prefers well-drained soils and tolerates a wide range of conditions, including dry and rocky soils. It is commonly found in mixed forests and on rocky slopes in Quebec.

Ecological roles
Eastern hop-hornbeam plays an important role in Quebec forest ecosystems. Its seeds provide food for various bird species and small mammals. The tree also offers habitat for many insects, thereby contributing to local biodiversity. Its ability to grow in poor soils and on rocky slopes helps reduce erosion and promotes soil stability.

Eastern hop hornbeam seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination.
