Blue cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides) is a native perennial plant found in the moist understories of North American hardwood forests. This plant can reach up to one metre in height and is characterized by its large, compound leaves. In the spring, blue cohosh produces small clusters of green-yellow to bluish flowers, which later give way to dark blue berries. Adapted to shaded environments, it is commonly found in deciduous forests, where it contributes to forest flora diversity.

Medicinal and Culinary Uses
Blue cohosh is known for its medicinal uses, particularly in gynecology. Its roots and rhizomes possess antispasmodic and stimulating properties. In modern herbal medicine, it is often used to treat gynecological issues, but its use should be supervised due to the potential for side effects at high doses.

Ecological Roles
Blue cohosh plays an important ecological role in moist forest ecosystems. Its berries, though toxic to humans, are consumed by certain bird species. Additionally, this plant effectively covers the forest floor, helping prevent erosion and promoting moisture retention, which is beneficial in shaded forest environments. Its presence enhances the understory's biodiversity, providing habitat for small organisms.

Blue cohosh seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Stratified Seeds - Blue Cohosh

Upon receipt, it is important to place the envelope containing the blue cohosh seeds in the refrigerator.

Blue cohosh seeds require a 60-day cold stratification period to ensure germination.

The seeds offered by Akène are sold in a sealed bag containing moist vermiculite. The first cold stratification period began in early September. The following schedule is recommended to complete the dormancy cycle:

Early November: The seeds are ready to start as indoor seedlings. If outdoor sowing is preferred, the seeds can remain in the refrigerator longer until it is time to start. It is advisable to check the seed bag occasionally, as some may begin to germinate. If this happens, they should be started indoors.

Sowing: Sow the seeds about 12 mm deep in a well-drained substrate rich in organic matter. Keep the substrate consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination is slow and variable, taking place over several weeks.

Blue cohosh grows well in cool to moist, organically rich, and well-drained soil. It thrives in part shade to full shade, in rich woodland soils and mixed forests.
