Painted Trillium (Trillidium undulatum) is a perennial native to eastern North America’s humid forests. It grows up to 45 cm in height and is characterized by its three large, oval, wavy green leaves, arranged in a whorl at the top of a slender stem. In the spring, painted trillium produces a single delicate flower with three white petals, marked with pinkish-red streaks at their base, giving it a painted appearance. This plant thrives in shaded, acidic understory environments, adding a graceful and colourful touch to woodland gardens. Painted trillium is a slow-growing species that takes several years to produce its first flower.

Ecological roles
Painted trillium plays an important ecological role in the understory. Its early blooming attracts pollinators, especially bees, which assist in understory plant pollination in the spring. The small bright red berries it produces at the end of the season provide food for small animals and birds, contributing to seed dispersal and forest floor regeneration.

Painted trillium seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the cultivation notes below for more details.

Growing Notes | Stratified Seeds - Painted Trillium

Painted trillium seeds require a 90-day cold stratification period, followed by a 30-day warm stratification period, and then a second 90-day cold stratification period to ensure germination.

The painted trillium seeds offered by Akène are sold in a sealed bag containing moist vermiculite. The first cold stratification period began in mid-August. Depending on the month of reception, they will be at a different stage of the stratification process.

The following schedule is recommended to complete the dormancy cycle:

Mid-August: Start the first cold stratification period of 90 days in the refrigerator.
Mid-November: Remove the bag from the refrigerator and leave it at room temperature, away from light and in its original packaging, for about 30 days for the warm stratification period.
Mid-December: Return this same package to the refrigerator for a second cold stratification period of about 90 days.
Mid-March: The seeds are ready to be sown.

Sowing: Sow the seeds about 3 mm deep in a well-drained substrate and keep it evenly moist. Germination may occur between 30 and 90 days after this process. Maintain consistent moisture to reproduce the natural conditions required for germination.
